Tribute to the Victims and Heroes of September 11 2001
This 2009 Sep 11th Christchurch, New Zealand Tribute with the release of 50 white doves is first in the world because of the timezone. As we begin our commemoration at 11am on Sep 11th, it is 7pm on Sep 10th in New York.
The American Club of Christchurch has organised a public Tribute to the victims and heroes of the 9/11 tragedy. This Tribute will take place at the Firefighters' Reserve in central Christchurch from 11am on September 11.
"We have worked closely with Murray Jamieson and local firefighters and many others to ensure this commemoration is a meaningful and fitting Tribute to all those all who lost their lives in New York on September 11 2001," said Patricia Thornton, organiser, representing the American Club of Christchurch.
The Firefighters' Reserve is located at the intersection of Madras and Kilmore Streets. The steel from the New York World Trade Centre site was gifted by the city of New York to the city of Christchurch to honour all firefighters worldwide. The steel's transformation into an artwork symbolic of the spirit and heroism of firefighters is told through Graham Bennett's artistic process.
"The city of New York also gifted steel girders to England and Spain. The Christchurch Firemens' Reserve was dedicated in October 2002 when Christchurch hosted the 7th World Firefighters Games," said Thornton.
Greg Crawford, Christchurch Metro Assistant Area Manager with the NZ Fire Service will attend, along with Blue Watch firefighters and volunteer firefighters. Fire equipment will be proudly displayed in the surrounding area.
